The name “United Nations”, coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their Governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights. The United Nations consists of 193 member states with Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish as the UN official languages. India has been the founding member of UN, two years before since independence from United Kingdom in 1947. In 1953, the chief delegate of India at the time, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was elected the first woman President of the UN General Assembly.
This year nations came together on armed conflicts especially in the middle-east, human rights, the environment and other important issues. The UN day is a historic day in which we pledge to be united in this connected world. Peace, Development and Human Rights are the founding ideals of United Nations and everyone should live up to them. The UN day is the anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations Organization by the majority of its signatories including the five permanent members of the Security Council. In the year 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that every year 24 October should observed as a public holiday by the member states.
The United Nations have been working for peace through 120000 peacekeepers in 16 operations in 4 continents, maternal health, human rights, combating climate change, prevention of conflicts, providing primary education for all, feeding 90 million hungry population in 75 countries, assisting 34 million refugees, providing vaccination to children and most importantly fighting poverty.
This day is observed to realize what more we can do to make this world a better place to live. The millennium development goals have cut down poverty into half, but many are still trapped in poverty.
On this day the UN also observes World Development Information Day with an object to draw public opinion to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international cooperation to solve them. It also helps in mobilizing young people to give opinion on trade and development problems.

I do not agree with you. The “United Nations Day and World Development Information Day” should not be a public holiday rather, it should be celebrated as a day when we commit to ourselves to follow the ideology of UNITY and INTEGRITY for the sustainable development and peaceful world.

Humanity- is a lost art.Everything in this world is driven by politics and personal agenda’s. Poverty and resource crunch stem from inequity. We need a body like UN and we have developmental issues because of human greed and selfishness and these things have no cure .But what we can have is systems and institutions which make humans and not robots.
