Water is the most essential requirement for survival of mankind. To mark its importance, World Water Day is observed across the globe on 22nd March to focus on the 750 million people who lack access to safe water. It is a day to raise awareness on conservation and management of water for the future generations. Every year the day is observed with a certain theme. The theme for 2015 is ‘Water and Sustainable Development’ that lays emphasis on the fact that water is crucial for sustainable development. The theme also acknowledges linkage of water with other sectors such as health, energy and urbanization among others which are important for the future we want.
Innovative Financial Advisors Pvt. Ltd. understands that water is crucial for public health. Every day humans need water for drinking, cooking and hygiene. As per recommendations made by WHO, requirements of majority of population is 7.5 litres per capita per day. Investments in access to safe drinking and basic sanitation services will help reap economic gains. In day to day life, we come across various ecosystems such as forests, wetlands and grasslands among others which are linked with the global water cycle. Innovative Financial Advisors Pvt. Ltd. believes that there needs to be a major shift in focus for implementing environmentally sustainable economic policies that helps restore the ecosystem balance and interconnectivity.
Water crisis is an issue not only in remotest rural areas but urban centers as well. As one in two people live in cities, there is a huge demand for drinking water. In the years to come, billions of people will move to urban areas and the present water infrastructure will implode. The industry needs to manage water and conserve water for sustainable returns. Since manufacturing requires huge amount of water, investments in water efficiency by the industry becomes all the more important. Apart from this, water is crucial for generating energy. As thermal power and hydro power require billions of gallons of water, it is therefore convenient to shift focus on renewable energy that doesn’t require large quantities of water.
Water and food are two main basic necessities of life. Globally, agriculture is the largest user of water, accounting for 70 per cent of total consumption. By 2050, agriculture will need to produce 60 per cent more food globally, and 100 per cent more in developing countries. Innovative Financial Advisors Pvt. Ltd. believes there is a need to increase efficiency of water usage, reduce water losses and incentivizing water conservation to help improve agriculture productivity with respect to water. Not only this, women across the globe is also responsible for collecting water and their role in preserving water cannot be undermined. On an average, 25 per cent of the day and 200 million hours every day are being consumed by women in collection of water. This crucial time that is being utilized in collection of water, if reduced by providing improved access to safe drinking water, may be utilized in education and/or income generation activities.
We need to understand that investment in access of safe drinking will not only improve the health status of a nation but also help reap sustainable economic gains.
