THE LESSER KNOWN FREEDOM FIGHTERS OF INDIA – FIINOVATION

History narrates the glory of various brave rulers and warriors who revolted against the British Raj and their unjustified demands. This article is a tribute to those shining unsung martyrs of glorious Indian history who sacrificed their lives to earn freedom from the clutches of ruthless British rulers.

Veerapandiya Kattabomman- The 18th century ruler of Panchalankurichi,Tamil Naidu, he is known to have ignited the spark of revolt against the unjustified taxes and diktats of East India Company, sixty years before the war of Independence.

He refused to bow against the demand of “Agriculture Tax” imposed by British rulers and instead waged a war against them. He was later, captured and hung by them in 1799. Tamil Nadu government has a memorial, statue and a postal stamp in his honor and the Indian navy communication center at Vijayanarayanam is named after him as INS Kattabomman.

Alluri Sitaram Raju- He was the leader of ill-fated armed “Rampa Rebellion” during 1922-24. His group included many other tribal leaders and supporters who fought against the British rulers for their atricoity on local tribal people under the Forest Act imposed by them. He was named as “Manyam Veerudu” (Hero of the Jungles) by the local people.

Pingali Venkayya- He is the man who designed our national flag. Intially the Indian National Congress modified and adopted the design as their flag and it was further modified to be the national flag of Indian democracy.

The Brave Trio: Benoy, Badal & Dinesh-The mastermind behind the famous attack on the Dalhousie Square in Kolkata (West Bengal) and murder of Col N.S. Simpson, the Inspector General of Prisons the brave trio Badal Gupta, Dinesh Gupta and Benoy will be forever remembered for their bravery in the history of Indian Independence. Since they didn’t wish to get arrested after murdering Col. Simpson so Badal consumed poison and other two shot themselves.

Matangini Hazara- A major contributor of the Quit India Movement and Non-cooperation Movement, she shook the spirit of British rulers for igniting the flame of patriotism and fight against injustice.
