International Day for Disaster Reduction, held on 13th October, every year celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their contribution to disaster and increasing awareness about the importance of checking the risks that they face. It encourages every individual, community and government to take part in building more disaster flexible communities and nations. This year, the theme for the day is ‘Knowledge for Life’.
The day commenced in year 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly. Since the UN General Assembly sees International Day for Disaster Reduction as a way to promote the global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. The day includes disaster prevention, reduction and preparedness. It was originally celebrated on the second Wednesday of October, but after two decades the UN General Assembly formally designated 13th October as the annual date. The objective of the observance is to spread awareness of how people are taking action to reduce their risks to disasters.
Every year on 13th October, the world marks the International Day for Risk Reduction and reducing disaster risk is also one of the priority. Fiinovation believes that by tackling vulnerability we can significantly reduce the risk of disaster and we can build safer and more flexible communities. This can be done through the combination of disaster preparedness and community-led reduction measures.
This year the focus is on the positive impact which women and girls can have on their families, communities and nations.
“Everything can be rebuilt, but lives cannot be recovered, and that’s what hurts the most,” – President Rafael Correa, Ecuador, after the April 2016 earthquake that killed 661 people.
Ministry of Home Affairs has set an agency, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in India which looks after the natural or man-made disasters and co-ordinates with crisis response. The authority was established in 2005 by the Government of India. The Prime Minister of India is the existing Chairperson of National Disaster Management Authority, which is governed by nine board members.
The 2016 campaign is to create a wave of awareness about actions taken to reduce death around the world. As Fiinovation observes International Day for Disaster Reduction on October 13 this year, we celebrate this day to spread awareness and encourage citizens and the government for disaster risk reduction and building disaster-free nations.
