Sport is a common denominator for people across the globe. Athletes have shown that sports enable people to come together in an effort to bring about global peace and to share a desire for self-improvement. Many organizations follow the concept of Sport for Social Development as a method of bringing about social change through the use of sports. Most organizations utilizing this method are geared towards underprivileged children and teenagers in urban areas covering a very important aspect for the society’s development. Sports for development programs can become a powerful tool for development and learning. They promote participation, inclusion, human values, acceptance of rules, discipline, health promotion, non-violence, tolerance, gender equality, teamwork, among others. All of the aforementioned problems are visible in the poor communities of developing countries. These issues can be dealt with by adopting programs that directly address them as part of their routine.

There is alot to learn from the movie Invictus..The story of Mandela restoring peace and initiating development with the help of sport is there for the world to see. Replication of the same in the North-East and other tribal belts that are naxal affected can help improve the situation. Sport can be a livelihood resource and also help people come together for a cause.

  6. It was in 2005, after sitting side by side to watch their countries play cricket, that the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh, and the then Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf, declared to the world that the peace process between their two nations was “irreversible”.

Sport can create hope where there was once only despair. It breaks down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of discrimination. Sport speaks to people in a language they can understand.

    So give sports(peace) a chance..

    • Why do you think sports is not considered to be part of CSR agenda of the corporate houses in India? Do you think they look at this as a measure of holistic development in any particular region?

Do you think if we implement the IPL model(different sports ofcourse) in Development Blocks across the country?
